This video presentation features the Visconti Castle in Somma Lombardo Varese. The
castle was built in the 9th century as fortress to protect the area and interests of the
dukedom of Milan. In the 16th century the castle was developed into a private
residence by the Visconti Brothers, Francesco and Guido.
In 1473 due to a family
argument between the two
brothers the castle was divided
into two, the elder Francesco
took up residence in the new
part of the castle and Guido,
the old part of the castle.

Further development created
the Castle we see today,
though in reality the castle
itself is composed of three
smaller castles, the Ancient
Castle, the Este Castle and the
Winter Castle, each with its
own courtyard and entrance.
The castle exhibits some
beautiful 17th century
frescoes by Procaccini.
