The Church of San Donato. Sesto Calende Lake Maggiore.

The Church of San Donato. Sesto Calende Lake Maggiore.
The Church of San Donato was founded by Liutardo, the Bishop of Pavia in 850, though the architectural structure we find today dates from the 11th century. The Church of San Donato is in the area originally called Scozola, this was an ancient site of worship and an important place of transit due to the vicinity of the lake which up until the early Middle Ages formed an inlet with a busy port. While exploring the church you will find masonry dating back to the early Middle Ages and Romanesque coffer. A Roman funeral engraving can be on the outside walls showing us the importance of this church throughout the ages. Inside there are frescoes by Cesare da Sesto painted in the 16th century and Paolo Baroffio and Biagio Bellotti from the 14th century.
