Sacro Monte of Belmonte in Valperga. Italian Lakes
The Sacro Monte of Belmonte was built in 1712, on the top of Monte Soglio, directed by Michelangelo da Montiglio, a Minor Observant friar. The Sacro Monte was built over an ancient church and a Benedictine monastery that dated back to the 11th century. In the mid 17th century, terracotta statues from Castellamonte were added to the chapels but were replaced by plaster versions in the early 18th century. The thirteen chapels are dedicated to the Mysteries of the Rosary, the chapels with there religious statues and are situated along the provincial road of Belmonte. They are situated at the top of the hill, beyond the Romanesque Sanctuary.
