Sacro Monte of Calvario in Domodossola. Italian lakes

The Sacro Monte of Calvario was built on the hills of Matterella overlooking Domodossola. The site was chosen for the project by the Franciscan fathers Andrea da Rho and Gioachino da Cassano. Eleven chapels were constructed and decorated with statues and frescoes that depict the Way of the Cross. The building of the sanctuary of Crocifisso begun in 1657. Alongside the sanctuary are the ruins of the 6th century Matterella castle. The castle was built in the 11th century by the Longobards and later donated to the Bishop of Novara in 1014. It was destroyed by the Swiss in 1415. The area was declared a Special Nature Reserve in 1991.
