Sacro Monte of the Blessed Virgin of Succour in Ossuccio. Italian lakes

The construction of the Sacro Monte of the blessed Virgin began in 1500 with the building of the sanctuary of the Madonna. Later in 1635 further work began on the Sacro Monte overlooking Lake Como, hidden between rows of olive groves and lush green woods. The site consists of fifteen chapels dedicated to the Mysteries of the Rosary which lead to the Monastery above. The sanctuary is the last in the series and is dedicated to the Coronation of the Blessed Virgin. On the hill you will find the old homes of the Franciscan monks who were the instrumental in the construction of the sacred mount. The legend of the Sanctuary tells of a deaf mute shepherd who found the statue of the Virgin in a cave. Today the statue can be found on display in the sanctuary. The chapels contain over 200 wooden sculptures of religious scenes including angels and animals.
