Sacro Monte of Beata Vergine in Oropa. Italian Lakes

The Sacro Monte of Beate Vergine Oropa in the Italian lakes is dedicated to Saint Eusebius, the first bishop of Vercelli who built the first small chapel high on the cliff. The building was consecrated in 1295 and renamed as the Church of Santa Maria. In 1617 work began on the Sacro Monte 17 chapels, 12 of which describe the Virgin Mary’s life through paintings and statues. The other five are dedicated to San Fermo, San Luca, Cappella Del Trasporto, Santa Maria Maddalena and Cappella Del Roc. The buildings were constructed on the cliff top called the “Oretto”. Work on the new basilica started in 1885 using plans drawn up by Galletti in 1774 and the building was consecrated in 1960. The old basilica houses the famous black Madonna and a collection of beautiful 14th century frescoes. The statue of the Black Virgin is the very heart of the Sanctuary, with pilgrims coming from all over the world to pray and experience the deep sense of religious faith.
