Sacro Monte of Santa Maria Assunta. The Sacro Monte of the Italian Lakes

The Sacro Monte of Santa Maria Assunta was built in 1598 by Costantino Massino, the Prior of the Marian monastery in Monferrato. The original buildings consisted of the 15 chapels of the Rosary Mysteries. During the centuries further construction took place developing the complex into the 23 chapels and 5 hermitages you can see today. The 23 chapels recount the story of the Blessed Virgin. In the late 16th and early 17th centuries many sculptors and artists created terracotta statues and frescoes which visitors can see in the chapels. The 19th century plaster sculptures are by Leonardo Bistolfi and Antonio Brilla. The Sacro Monte complex also has five hermitages.
