Borromeo Fortress Angera. Places to visit.

The Fort at Angera is an excellent example of a medieval fortress, standing on the cliff’s overlooking Lake Maggiore. From the XII century main tower, you can view the lake, Aroma, and the magnificent Alpine ranges. This strategic position was first used in Roman times to control the area on Lake Maggiore, protecting the commerce and the traffic from raiders. In the middle Ages the Fortress was the property of he Archbishops of Milan and later of the Visconti family. Later at the time of the Ambrosian Republic, the Fortress passed to the Borromeo, family. Inside the fortress, you will discover the gothic style Hall of Justice, covered with enchanting frescoes, paintings telling the story of the exploits of Ottone Visconti during the war against the Torrioni; they are among the oldest in Lombardy with a non religious subject and are attributed to the Lombard school dating from the XIV century. The fortress has a museum which displays over thirteen rooms the two-century history of the doll.
