Torba Monastery Gornate Olona. Places to Visit
The Torba complex dates back to its days as an outpost of the Roman Empire and then as a defensive tower for the Goths and Longobards in the 5th century. In the 8th century a church was added to the building as a sanctuary and Monastery for the work of Benedictine nuns. In the 13th century the nuns left the area of Torba and the buildings were converted to farm use. The F.A.I. bought the historic area and began restoring and renovating the buildings, it now offers visitors the possibility to relive history again and to admire its artistic qualities.
In the tower you can see the magnificent religious frescos which cover the walls and the rare paintings of the 8th century. Set in the forests near Varese, at the feet of the Castelseprio Park, this significant complex of Torba is an excellent example of history going back more than a millennium.
