Castello di Masnago, Varese, Italian Lakes.
The Castello di Masnago was originally a fortified tower, built in the 11 th century. More fortification were added in the 12 th century. It was further enlarged in the 15 th century by the Castiglioni family, beginning the process of transforming the building intended as a military fortress into a villa for residence and pleasure. This new building had both defensive and residential functions. In the 18 th century the Castle belonged to the Marliani Counts. The renovation during this period clearly showed the residential purpose of the building, with extensions on the southern and western sides of the villa.
Today the Castle houses the Civica galleria di arte contemporanea of the Commune of Varese.
The Municipal Contemporary Art Gallery, opened in 1996 with thirteen new rooms recovered from the 13 th century wing of the castle, the museum represents one of the best examples of courtly Gothic.
