Cannobio, Lake Maggiore. Italian Lakes
Cannobio, Lake Maggiore. Italian Lakes
Cannobio, a beautiful medieval village that has managed to preserve its rich historical heritage as well as its natural lake and mountain setting. It is located on the magnificent shores of Lake Maggiore, a short distance from the Swiss border. The first village that the northern European tourist meets coming from San Bernardino and San Gottardo. The last Italian town on the west coast of Maggiore, only 4 km before the Switzerland border, it is a lively little town and one of the most important tourist resorts on the lake.
Its origins are ancient and its history shown by houses of different ages one beside the other on the lake side. Situated on the west coast, before the entrance of the Cannobina Valley. Cannobio is a medieval village, at 214 m altitude, with 6000 inhabitants. Surrounded by small villages situated on the hills around. Its maze of narrow streets opening onto numerous squares peering out over the sparkling lake, as if seeking relief from the shade of the mountains rising along an enchanted valley at its back, this is the ancient village of Cannobio. Its two ports are ranged along the villages lake promenade.
Lake Maggiore’s mild weather allows us to admire a rich varied vegetation in which local species are joined by typically Mediterranean flora that gives rise to the famous spring floweringgs of mimosa, rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias.
There are also countless mountain trails that allow walkers to reach remote country settlements and peaks offering spectacular and unforgettable views. The area surrounding Cannobio is full of natural beauty, just a stone’s throw from the lake for all those wishing to restore body and spirit there is the natural attraction called “Orrido di Sant’Anna”, a deep gorge cut into the rock by the waters of the Cannobino river. L’Orrido di Sant’Anna is a foaming waterfall, falling on the rocks of the torrent Cannobino. Visitors will discover the traces of the Roman and Medieval times as well as the nineteenth century.
A wealth of historical treasures is in fact hidden amongst the cobbled lanes, the frescoes decorating the massive doorways to the houses and the formal parade of buildings along the lakefront.Beside, the little church of Sant’Anna, 1665. A walk leads to an isolate village called Carmine. On a piece of overhanging rock, with a panoramic view on the lake, there is the little church of San Gottardo, typical medieval building. Its erection lasted almost one century, from 1334 to 1431. There are also countless waymarked mountain trails that allow walkers to reach remote country settlements and peaks offering spectacular, unforgettable views.
