The sanctuary of Santa Caterina on Lake Maggiore. You can reach the sanctuary on
foot or by boat.  According to tradition the hermitage was founded by Alberto Besozzi,
who after having survived a storm while crossing the lake,  retreated to a rocky ledge
to live the life of a hermit. Here he built a chapel in honour of Santa Caterina, visible
today in the church. Built in the 10 th century,  it was soon joined by two other
churches dedicated to San Nicola and Santa Maria Nuova, built in the 14th century.
The Church and the two
convents of Santa Caterina,
which a recent restoration has
brought back to their ancient
historic splendour, stand
proud on the cliff. Its
buildings, apparently hanging
in space, allow the visitors to
be immersed in the
atmosphere of the XI century
and to enjoy the spectacular
panorama. In the summer the
church and the cloister
become concert halls offering
magical lakeside nights of
classical music.

Late Gothic Frescoes of the
14th century can be found in
the Charterhouse.
